It's A Quest
Not A Test
A Parent & Student Playbook for a Game-Based Mindset
It’s A Quest, Not A Test applies the same design principles that make games genuinely compelling — clear objectives, visible progress, tolerance for failure, meaningful choice— to the academic work students already face every day. This isn’t a book about making school feel like a video game. It’s a book about giving parents and students a shared framework for turning difficulty into something worth engaging with, instead of something to avoid.
Turning challenges into quests, mistakes into power-ups, and exams into opportunities to win — a research-backed framework parents and students can use together, starting tonight.

A Word From The Author
This is the book I wish I had when my daughter was starting to love playing video games all the time, but struggling to pass all of her classes in school. This quest mindset framework makes school relatable for those kids who love playing video games.
David Ashe

Mindset & Identity

Why games keep us playing, why school is already a game in disguise, and how to choose a “character class” for how you learn best.
Strategy & Skills
Part 2
Treating mistakes as experience points, building a skill tree, and preparing for the “boss battle” — the test, essay, or exam itself.
The Long Game
Part 3
Reflection after the battle, parents as quest guides, and building a personal game system that lasts beyond any one exam.
Complete Series
Quest Guide Companions
The original quest guide playbook gives you the basis for the mindset framework and includes toolkits for parents, students and teachers. For even greater depth and extended tools there are additional guides that are more specific to each level of student and provide even more tools and approaches for parents and teachers.
Upcoming Audio Book
We will be creating an audio book of the primary quest guide to give parents and students, as well as teachers and students the opportunity to listen together and absorb the concepts at one time. The ability to listen and pause when necessary to discuss the ideas that are being presented allows for greater understanding in the moment.
